From the Engine Room to the Canvas: How the Sea Led Me Back to Art

People often ask me how a Chief Engineer in the Merchant Navy became an artist. The answer isn’t a sudden career change—it’s a journey that began with loneliness, self-discovery, and a simple sketch.

As a Chief Engineer, I spend months at sea, where the endless horizon can be both breathtaking and isolating. During one voyage, I realized I had forgotten to bring the image of Lord Mahadev that usually accompanied me on every contract. Instead of downloading a picture, I picked up a pencil and decided to sketch Him myself.

That single sketch changed something within me.

As I focused on every line and detail, I entered a state of complete calm. The loneliness faded, my mind became still, and sketching turned into a form of meditation. One sketch led to another, and before long, I had rediscovered a part of myself that had been quietly waiting for years.

It reminded me of my teenage days when I loved drawing. I dreamed of painting, but financial limitations meant I couldn’t afford paints or canvases. Sketching became my creative outlet while I focused on my education and building a career.

Years later, after achieving financial stability, I finally had the opportunity to pursue that childhood dream. In 2021, I picked up a paintbrush—not just to create art, but to reconnect with a passion I had carried within me for years.

Today, my paintings are deeply rooted in spirituality and devotion. Many of my works portray divine forms, inspired by the peace, strength, and guidance I have found through faith. Alongside these are paintings born from the beauty of the sea, imagination, and life’s experiences—each one telling a story from my journey.

What began as a way to overcome loneliness has become a lifelong passion. Every brushstroke reminds me that the greatest journeys are not always across oceans—sometimes they are the ones that lead us back to ourselves.
